Easter Baskets for Little Vegans

Easter is one of my favorite times of year, and now that Hal is nearly 2 I decided to do proper Easter Baskets for the boys this year. And seriously, I had way too much fun putting them together. I mean, any excuse to buy cute, pastel colored stuff and I'm in! I can't wait to see Hal's face on Easter Sunday morning!

I wanted to keep everything affordable, and of course vegan so ended up finding lots of non-edible bits and bobs to include (although there are a couple of Choices Chocolate Bunnies in there because, you know, Easter!)

I got the felt bunny and chick baskets from Hobbycraft for £2 each, then I picked up the bunny ears, bubbles & cup from the pound shop and the bath washer, little chicks, golden eggs, finger paints & pinwheel from Wilkos - all for £1 or less. I found these gorgeous chalk eggs in Paperchase and the Choices bunnies at the supermarket. I couldn't resist adding an Easter bath bomb from Lush and opted for Fluffy Egg. I think in total I spent about £15, which is pretty good I think!

Do you do Easter baskets for your kids?
What do you fill them with?

PB&J, Veggie Sausage, Avocado & Blueberries.

Oatmeal made with soy milk and topped with peanut butter, hemp hearts, raisins & dark chocolate chips.

Tofu fingers, roasted cauliflower, tomato & raspberries.

Chickpea peanut stew with mashed potatoes, cucumber sprinkled with chia seeds & tinned pineapple.

Wholemeal toast with almond butter, chia seeds, hemp hearts & strawberries.

Mini Pizza, clementine segments & blueberries.

Freeze-dried peas & sweetcorn!

Wholemeal toast with almond butter, chia seeds & molasses, golden kiwi, toffee fruit & nut nakd nibbles & banana rice cakes.

We're really into green smoothies at the moment! I usually make a big one for me and fill a couple of Squooshi pouches for Hal. My favorite combo is banana, passion fruit, orange juice, frozen mango & pineapple and loads of spinach!

Vegan Lunchables! Vbites Cheatin' Ham Slices, Violife Original Slices, Ritz crackers & strawberries.

Christmas 2015

Better late than never, that's what I say! I've been meaning to write about the Christmas Crafternoon and just general Christmas-y stuff for weeks and weeks, but the lead up to Christmas was mad, and since Boxing Day both boys have been ill, or teething, or ill...So here I am, mid-January, writing about Christmas stuff! Hey-ho!

The Christmas Crafternoon is always one of my favorites of the year. I love Christmas, and everything it entails, so of course I went all out for our December Crafternoon.

Like last year we decorated Gingerbread Houses, although this year I made things a LOT less stressful for myself by buying them rather than making them from scratch! (I found accidentally vegan ones in my local Tiger store!) I put them together with burnt sugar and stuck them to place-mats I covered with brown parcel paper. I made some Aquafaba Royal Icing and popped it into piping bags ready for everyone to use. We all brought sweets and sprinkles to decorate the houses, and we had a lot of fun!

It was amazing how different everyone's Gingerbread Houses turned out! Everyone's individual styles came through, which was fantastic! We also had such a lovely, relaxed time just chatting, listening to Christmas music and drinking peppermint hot chocolates!

I'm really looking forward to Januarys Crafternoon which takes place in a couple of weeks time! I can't wait to see my ladies again!

This year I decided to order some Christmas Cards with a photo of Hal & Ezra on them, which I thought was a fantastic idea and shouldn't bee too difficult. Well let me tell you, getting a photo of a very active 18 month old and a 5 month old both smiling (or just not crying!!) was a nightmare! Eventually I settled for the above photo - I didn't want Hal to have his dummy in his mouth, but it was the only way we could get him to stay still (albeit momentarily!) Although I must say, if ever I feel down all I have to do is look through the hilariously awful 20-odd photo's we took and I can't stop laughing! Here's my favorite awful one!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year!

Kool-Aid Playdoh

I have a confession to make...I love playdoh, well I love playing with it, I love the feel of it but boy oh boy do I hate the smell of it! I know loads of people who LOVE the smell but I can't stand it one bit! I also don't like how pricey it is, especially when a lot of it ends up stuck on the carpet or eaten by a certain cute toddler!

I figured if Hal's going to sneak nibbles of it I'd rather make my own - that way I know what's in it at least! I searched Pinterest for tutorials and found out that you can add color and scents to your playdoh by adding Kool-Aid to it! As someone who loves colorful stuff I couldn't resist trying it out, and I'm really happy with the results!

This playdoh is really soft and smooth, it's quick and easy to make and it looks and smells great! I'm planning to make some little pots of different colors for some kids for Christmas this year - who doesn't love playdoh!?

And now that I know how easy it is to make, I'm looking forward to creating all sorts of different scented playdoh for different seasons - I'm thinking gingerbread at Christmas, to make pretend cookies! How much fun will that be!

Kool-Aid Playdoh
Adapted from this fab tutorial
Makes 1 batch in 1 color

1C plain flour
1/4C salt
1Tbsp coconut oil
2/3C hot water
1 packet of Kool-Aid

In a medium sized mixing bowl mix together the flour, salt and kool-aid. Add the coconut oil to the hot water and let it melt before adding it to the dry mixture. Mix together with a wooden spoon at first and then with your hands until a soft dough comes together. It might seem a but wet but it gets dryer as it cools so don't worry! That's it! So simple, right?

Store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

How We Use Re-usable Nappies

I thought I'd share a bit about how we use re-usable nappies today, as it's something I feel passionate about and it's one of the things I'm often asked about.

When I was pregnant with Hal we started to look into an alternative to disposable nappies and I was overwhelmed with all the different types of nappies out there! While I was looking into it, I was contacted by a gNappies/gDiapers representative who asked if we'd like to try some of their disposable nappies, comprising of a washable outer and a biodegradable insert. I'm so glad I said yes! We've been using gNappies ever since, and they're so easy to use and comfortable for the boys bums! gNappies have really redefined the disposable, making it just as easy but kinder on the environment.

gNappies are so easy to use - they're velcro which makes things super simple as opposed
to having poppers all over the place! We choose to use their handy disposable inserts for

the first month or so with a newborn, as let's be honest - the last thing you need when
trying to recover from giving birth and getting to grips with breastfeeding and sleepless nights is a pile of poopy nappies to wash! The disposable inserts are biodegradable, so you can even put non-poopy ones on the compost heap! We find that we only need to use one pair of gPants per day for each of our boys, and simply change the inserts each time we change their bums.

The plastic lining of the gPants protects the actual cloth pants from getting dirty most of the time, which is great as again, it means less laundry for us! We also swear by peepee-teepees (pictured in the top right hand corner of the picture above) which you pop on your little boy's willy for the moment when he inevitably pees while you're changing his nappy!

After a couple of months we switch to cloth liners. A couple of tips to prevent leaking - double the liners up! Put them cotton sides facing out and then pop into the plastic liner, this makes the gPants last longer and stops spillages! Also, we've found that you get less leaks if you use liners one size down from the pants your child is in (for example: medium gpants + small liner) don't ask me why, but it works!

We do one or two loads of nappy laundry per week, and gpants can always be thrown in with regular laundry to be washed. Newborn poopy nappies can be rinsed off and chucked in the wash, and toddler poops can be scraped/popped into the loo and flushed away before washing the inserts. We like to use disposable inserts at night as they hold more liquid so you don't need to change a nappy in the middle of the night!

We love using G-nappies - better for the environment, better for your baby and better for your bank account!

Do you use cloth nappies? Which ones are your favorites?
If you have any questions about gNappies or re-usable nappies, feel free to leave them in the comments and I'll do my best to answer them!

Mother of Two

I'm now a mother of two! Little baby Ezra Joel Mitchell arrived at exactly 37 weeks, 7:20pm on 27th June 2015 weighing 8lb 4oz.

Labour was long (more than 30 hours) and ended rather dramatically, leaving me a bit traumatized and Ezra in need of special care for the first few days. Thankfully he's a strong little fella and is now really well and thriving. We are so glad to be home and I'm overjoyed to be together with all my boys, my beautiful family.

It's only been a week, but so far I'm loving being a mother of two.

Sponsor Spotlight: The Littlest Herbivore

I'm so excited to share a bit today about one of this month's lovely sponsors - The Littlest Herbivore! The Littlest Herbivore is a super cute etsy shop selling handmade clothes for compassionate little herbivores! Each item is made to order and all items are vegan friendly - yay!

I love the cute, compassionate designs on the baby clothes and am compiling a wishlist of bits and bobs I want to order for my boys!

Ashley, the talent behind these gorgeous designs was kind enough to answer some questions about her shop, and some fun ones too!

How did you start your business?
I started my business unknowingly really. We planned a home birth for the birth of our first & only child and I wanted him to have a special first outfit like parents get for their babies born in hospitals. So I hand painted the first of many "born at home" onesies. As he grew we decided I should stay at home, I launched my etsy shop and added shirts with a message of compassion for all living things. It's been a pleasant surprise to see all the support I've received and I especially love seeing pictures of kids all around the world wearing shirts and onesies I made with my own hands.

Where do you get your inspiration?
I get inspiration from other vegan families who are raising the future of veganism. I also love vintage illustrations of animals and have been trying to incorporate that into my recent work.

What's your favorite film?
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. I'm a sap for artsy romance!

What's your favorite food?
All vegan sweets! I love baking and am definitely a cookie loving girl.

What three things would you take to a desert island?
(Aside from boring survival stuff) it would be a sketch book and pencil, the collective work of H.G. Wells and a hammok.

The Littlest Herbivore is offering 10% off for Floral Frosting readers until 1st June!

Polly Pockets // Collections

As children my sister and I loved playing with Polly Pockets, and over the years we accumulated quite a collection! I forgot about them until recently when I discovered that my Mum still had them all in a box in her attic! Last time I visited my parents I had a great time looking through them all, and snapped a few photos of my favorite ones in the collection to share with you guys!

These two are the classic kind I picture when someone says 'Polly Pocket' - the white one is a Wedding one (although the bride and the vicar were nowhere to be found) and the yellow is a Baby one! If I remember correctly the Wedding one actually played the wedding march when you opened the doors! Amazing!

The above three Polly Pockets were part of a holiday series I believe. I love that the Island and the Beach Hotel fit perfectly side by side - I remember playing with these a lot! And you can't go on holiday without your camper van! It even has a little shower and everything!

This Ballerina one was one of my sister's favorites! I love how it folds out to create a beautiful theatre, and especially love the detail - the mirror and bar in the dance studio are great! And the ballerina's legs actually split so you can have her doing proper ballet moves!

This last one, although not an official Polly Pocket, was and still is one of my favorites of our collection. Not only does the outside look amazing, but I love the fun, bright colors inside, the teensy aliens and best of all Mini Mouse and Daisy Duck in proper little space suits! Just too cool, in my opinion.

This is only about half of the collection! I can't wait until my kids are old enough to play with these just like I did.

Do you have any Polly Pockets?
Which toys do you wish you'd kept from your childhood?
